Arsenal are now reportedly starting to think they can beat Chelsea and sign West Ham’s Declan Rice in the summer.

According to The Times, Arsenal have now picked out Rice as their “top target” for the summer transfer window.

It is understood that the Gunners are starting to become confident they can nudge Chelsea aside to sign the 24-year-old midfielder, who could attract interest from Manchester United as well.

The report explains the England international is expected to leave West Ham at the end of the season because his contract will be entering its final year at the London Stadium.

Rice deserves to be playing in the biggest games every week given his ability, so it’s a shame he’s captaining 18th-placed West Ham this season in the Premier League.

The all-action central midfielder has developed into a top player in the last few years for club and country, so it’s no surprise the big teams are linked to his signature.

It definitely feels like this summer is the perfect timing for him to make the next step in his career.

In our view, he would be a serious addition to Chelsea’s midfield.

His leadership and quality would improve the Blues in the centre of the park, but can the club afford to go throw another £80million around given their recent spending?

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s pulling power in the summer should only improve if they win the Premier League title this season. Some will point to them losing out on both Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk this January, though.

Will it be third time lucky for Arsenal when battling Chelsea to sign players in 2023?

Described as “exceptional” by Pep Guardiola in 2021, Rice should soon be dining at the top table in club football.

Journalist Ben Jacobs recently claimed that the West Ham star would still be interested in joining Chelsea even if they can’t offer Champions League football next season. As it stands, it would be a big surprise if Graham Potter’s Blues side qualify for Europe’s elite club competition next year.
